His father was a fan of the cricketer Sunil Gavaskar and wanted to name his son after Gavaskar's, but mistook Rohan Gavaskar's name as Rahul.

He started training at the age of 10, and, two years later, He started playing matches for Bangalore United Cricket Club and his club in Mangalore.

Brian Lara praise for KL Rahul, when he was asked to name the current batsman who he loves to watch:

"That is simple, KL Rahul. Assuming you are discussing the two groups that are playing, KL Rahul is most certainly somebody for me who I would pay to watch bat. I simply love watching KL Rahul. Particularly in the T20 variant of the game, when you see a person batting with the method and capacity to score runs with customary batting shots, it's only outstanding to watch. He is an intriguing one for me since, supposing that you wind the clock back 2 or 3 years prior, he was likely more a without a doubt in fact right Test match batsman. Be that as it may, what he has had the option to do with his T20 batting in the last two IPLs, has been totally amazing. He is turning himself now to be a preferred white-competitor over he is a Test match player and that doesn't occur frequently."
