Royal Challengers Bangalore has appointed Sania Mirza as a mentor for the upcoming Women's Premier League (WPL), which will be held in Mumbai from March 4 to 26.
The franchise made another announcement on Wenesday, revealing that Australian Ben Sawyer has been hired as the head coach. Sawyer, who currently serves as the head coach for New Zealand Women, was part of the Women's World Cup-winning team as an assistant coach with Australia last year.
Former Tamil Nadu off-spinner and lead talent scout, Malolan Rangarajan, has been appointed as an assistant coach, while former India batter VR Vanitha has joined as a fielding coach.
RX Murali has been recruited as a power-hitting coach. Murali has gained an excellent reputation in Bengaluru, having trained several Karnataka players, including well-known names like Mayank Agarwal.
Sania Mirza, who is the first Indian woman to win a major tennis title, with six titles across women's doubles and mixed doubles, is anticipated to join the Royal Challengers Bangalore team after the conclusion of the ATP Dubai Open, which may be her final professional tournament. Mirza, who is 36 years old, declared her retirement from professional tennis before the Australian Open, where she and her partner Rohan Bopanna finished as runners-up in the mixed doubles.
In an interview with RCB TV, Sania Mirza expressed her surprise and excitement at being offered the mentorship role with the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Mirza stated that she hopes to inspire young girls to pursue sports as a career and to help them believe in themselves despite the odds, so that they can achieve their objectives.Mirza expressed a strong interest in working with younger Indian players and helping them handle the pressure associated with playing at a high level. She believes that her experience over the past two decades has given her valuable insights into developing mental strength, which she hopes to impart to the players she mentors. As the only Indian woman to play at this level for so many years, Mirza feels that she can offer valuable guidance and support to the players.
At the inaugural auction, Royal Challengers Bangalore assembled an impressive team, including notable players such as Smriti Mandhana, Ellyse Perry, Megan Schutt, Sophie Devine, Dane van Niekerk, and Richa Ghosh. The team is scheduled to begin their WPL campaign on March 5, the second day of the tournament, when they face the Delhi Capitals at Brabourne Stadium.
