Tom Curran, an all-rounder for England who was part of the World Cup-winning team, had a challenging year in 2022. In January, he suffered a stress fracture in his back, which resulted in him being sidelined for several weeks. As a consequence, Curran did not feature in any matches for England until July 2021, and he did not represent any other country throughout the year. Despite playing First-Class cricket for Surrey later in the year and appearing for Oval Invincibles in the T20 Blast, the 27-year-old was unable to secure a place in the England squad.
This year, Tom Curran had a more consistent return to cricket by playing for the Desert Vipers in the DP World International League T20 in the UAE. He scored 150 runs and took 12 wickets in 11 matches, helping the Vipers advance to the final, where they lost to Gulf Giants. Despite the team's defeat, Curran feels reinvigorated and believes that he is in a much better position after getting back to playing cricket this year.
In a recent interview with Hindustan Times, Tom Curran highlighted the importance of competitions such as ILT20 for his career at this stage. Although he currently doesn't have a specific plan to return to the international arena, he acknowledged that the possibility is certainly there.
"Any cricket is important. The break I had coincided with my stress fracture, which was much needed. After playing cricket for so many years, it's good to have a reset and take a break. It's essential to get fit and strong again, as well as to mentally refresh yourself," Curran stated in the interview with Hindustan Times.
Tom Curran expressed his fondness for his time with the Desert Vipers, saying, "I loved my time at Desert Vipers; it's a fantastic group. The coaching staff and management have been incredible." Currently, his goal is to enjoy playing cricket and be content with his life. He added that he is not thinking about a return to international cricket at the moment.
Despite being sidelined, Tom Curran's younger brother, Sam, continued to make a big impact in international cricket. In December of last year, Sam set a new record for the highest offer in IPL auction history, and was signed by Punjab Kings for a staggering INR 18.5 crore. Meanwhile, Tom Curran, who did not attract as much attention, did not sell at the auction, But it hasn’t diminished his self-assurance.
Curran expresses that with the rise of many leagues, the IPL still remains at the top and has held that position for a while. However, he acknowledges the difficulty in competing as there are now numerous leagues with very high standards. Regardless of the league, Curran is determined to give his best and perform well for his team.
